Getting experience from the food

I've been giving my pets baked bream because it says it increases experience gain by 50%. When we give other food to a pet it says our pet is gaining 150% more experience from being so happy. Then when I look at the pet it says very happy + 150% experience modifier. What is the difference?

Baked Bream grants an experience bonus on top of the happiness bonus. You can get the happiness bonus from sending pets to the spa too.

So if I give my pets baked bream do I still need to send them to the spa so they can get the happiness bonus?
