Why can't I use health potions in endless dungeon?

I'm at a point where it's impossible to beat the boss without healing, but the game tells me I can't use potions in the dungeon. If I can't progress without eggs and I can't get eggs without beating bosses, there's no point in continuing to play.

I’ll play around with wing able to use items during some activities and see how it feels. It seems like using a item instead of a skill would be okay.
