I think it’s frost breath attack is also pretty strong once it gets to it orb of mastery level, but I haven’t played with it yet.
It's so hard for me to pick favorites since all the pets are amazing and unique in their own way, but if I were to pick one at this moment from pets who are not evolved pets, I would choose Scorchy. This is because scorchy can attack all enemies, can heal himself/herself and everyone in the party with flame keeper, can get rid of negative status effects from everyone in the party with cleansing flame and has a lot of intelligence and speed. Scorchy is a very strong pet who also embodies the spirit of supporting all members of the team he or she is a part of.
I don't know, but female Axle is pretty powerful with tainted pendant, and so is female aquara. For the evolved pets, I'd say Kaze because it always destroys all my other pets in the arena.

Axle and tainted pendant always makes me laugh a bit when the pendant knocks out the pet and then Axle splashes them afterward.
I personally like tanky pets. Terra and Guardian Pendant is a decent combo. But if you look at the leaderboards, Axle, Noel, Torta, Kaze and Lectry are the top pets.
Aquara is pretty good if you have both of them and you have their beckoning call skill mastered to level 10 but like Mystical Alchemist said, all the pets are good in there own way. Make sure you use cracked or chipped orbs of awakening on the pets that evolve because they're extra awesome.
I gave my male Nole a brand of torta and some orbs of mastery. I've changed my mind. Definitly the best! However, not in strength, twitch is probably my favorite.
I think the best is a coldra, mine does about 2,000,000 damage
