equipment question

I keep going back and reading about the different equipment and what it does so I can make the best choice of what I want to use. What does it mean when it says that the skill is used in slot3? For example this is what it says for pirate's hook. When it talks about slots does that mean strength, intelligence, speed, and vitality? Would that make strength slot 1?

Each pet has 6 skill slots. The skills that each pet comes with are in slot 1 and 2. You have to add skills to 3-6 with glyphs.
